What is tool steel?

Tool steel is a type of carbon steel and alloy steel specifically used for manufacturing tools, molds and dies. Its unique composition and heat treatment process endow it with excellent hardness, wear resistance and toughness, making it an ideal choice for cutting, forming and shaping other materials. Tool steel is divided into several groups, each of which is customized for specific applications and performance requirements.

About The tool steel

Tool steel, as an important material for mechanical equipment components, has the following performance characteristics:

High hardness and wear resistance: After heat treatment, tool steel can achieve high hardness, extending the service life of tools.

Good heat treatment performance: Through appropriate heat treatment processes, the performance of tool steel can be significantly improved.

Excellent thermal hardness: Especially high-speed steel, it can maintain high hardness at high temperatures and is suitable for high-speed cutting.

Good toughness and strength: Alloy tool steel maintains high hardness while having good toughness, reducing the risk of tool fracture during use.

Classification of Tool Steel

Tool steel, due to its excellent properties, is widely used in fields such as mechanical manufacturing, mold processing, and metal processing.

According to specific usage requirements, choosing the appropriate type of tool steel can significantly enhance the performance and service life of the tools.

Carbon Tool Steel (T series)

Carbon tool steel has a carbon content ranging from 0.7% to 1.3%, featuring high hardness, good processability and relatively low price. It is often used in the manufacture of hand tools, low-speed cutting tools and simple molds. Common grades include T8, T10, T12, etc.

01

Alloy Tool Steel

Alloying elements (such as Cr, W, V, Mo, etc.) are added to carbon steel to enhance its hardenability, wear resistance and thermal hardness. It is suitable for manufacturing tools that bear high loads and have complex shapes.

02

High-speed steel (HSS)

High-speed steel is a kind of high-alloy tool steel, containing a relatively high proportion of elements such as tungsten, molybdenum and vanadium, and has excellent thermal hardness and wear resistance. It is suitable for manufacturing high-speed cutting tools, such as drill bits, milling cutters, turning tools, etc.

Dahong Precision - Processing can provide perfect surface treatment services for your cnc machined steel parts, including polishing, passivation, sandblasting, powder coating and

electroplating options. Every kind of organization has its own advantages, so it is essential to choose one that can meet all your requirements!

Polishing
Polishing makes the surface smooth and beautiful, enhances the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of parts, reduces the coefficient of friction, and is suitable for various materials such as metals and plastics.
Passivation
Passivation can enhance the corrosion resistance of parts, reduce oxidation, prevent rusting of metal surfaces, and is suitable for easily corroded materials such as stainless steel, thereby extending the service life of parts.
Bead Blasted
Sandblasting cleans the surface of parts through high-speed abrasive impact, removes oxide layers and burrs, increases roughness to enhance the adhesion of the coating, evenly treats the surface, improves fatigue resistance, has wide applicability, and can strengthen the surface performance of metals.
Plating
Electroplating deposits a metal layer on the surface of parts through electrolysis, enhancing their corrosion resistance, wear resistance, electrical conductivity and decorative properties. It has a wide range of applications.
Steel Brushing
Wire drawing is a process that forms a uniform linear texture on the surface of parts through mechanical friction. It features scratch resistance, wear resistance, enhanced texture, concealment of fine scratches, and improved anti-fingerprint effect. It is commonly used for surface treatment of metals such as steel and aluminum.

About The tool steel FAQ

CNC Polyamide (PA) material FAQ

What is the carbon content of tool steel?

Tool Carbon Steel:Carbon content range 0.65% to 1.35%
Alloy Tool Steel:Carbon content range 0.3% - 1.6%
High-Speed Tool Steel:Carbon content range 0.7% - 1.65%

What HRC can the hardness reach after heat treatment?

The hardness of tool steel after heat treatment covers a wide range of HRC 40 to 70. The specific value needs to be achieved through process adjustment according to the characteristics of the steel type and the application requirements. For instance, cold working dies that require extremely high wear resistance can achieve a hardness of HRC above 65 through high-carbon high-chromium steel and low-temperature tempering, while tools that need to withstand high-temperature cutting rely on the high red hardness of high-speed steel and the quenching and tempering process to achieve a hardness of HRC above 63.

How to choose the appropriate tool steel material according to the usage requirements?

The key to choosing the appropriate tool steel material lies in clarifying the usage requirements, including factors such as the strength, wear resistance, toughness, heat resistance and processing method required by the workpiece. For instance, for high wear resistance requirements, high-carbon and high-chromium tool steels (such as D2) can be selected. For applications subject to impact, cold work die steels with good toughness (such as A2) are more suitable. As for hot work dies, steel grades with good red hardness (such as H13) should be chosen.

How to prevent rust and package the surface of tool steel parts?

To prevent tool steel parts from rusting during transportation and storage, anti-rust oil is usually applied to the surface, then wrapped with moisture-proof oil paper, and finally packaged in strong cardboard boxes or wooden cases.

Can it be cut as required (such as fast wire cutting, slow wire cutting processing)? What is the minimum order quantity?

We can provide customized cutting services according to your requirements, including fast wire cutting and slow wire cutting processing, to meet the demands of different precisions and processing effects. Whether it's sample making or bulk customization, Dahong Precision supports flexible ordering with a low minimum order quantity, allowing orders to start from one piece. This helps your project achieve efficient procurement and rapid delivery while controlling costs.
